Dale Hossfield missing after boat washes ashore

The Coast Guard, FWC and the Brevard County sheriff’s office are all searching for a missing man whose boat washed up in Melbourne Beach. Katherine Bond arrived at her Airbnb in Melbourne Beach on Wednesday night to an unexpected sight. “There was a boat out here right behind the house up on the sand and there was a sheriff’s helicopter just one house down,” Bond said. Bond said the 29-foot boat was beached on the sand and a sheriff’s helicopter and several deputies were also on the beach.”The deputies were here kind of watching over the boat, and later in the evening, a tow-boat came to take it away,” Bond said.According to the Coast Guard and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the boat belonged to 68-year-old Dale Hossfield.Investigators said Hossfield was last seen taking his boat out of storage in Ft. Pierce Wednesday morning and was last seen sailing out of the inlet around 2 pm At some point, a concerned loved one reported him missing. His boat was reported being seen to the Coast Guard around 5:45 pm on Wednesday, washed up in Melbourne Beach with the motor still running but no sign of Hossfield. Bond said it took the sheriff’s office several hours Wednesday night to get the boat unstuck.” At first, the rope snapped and came flying back in,” Bond said. Bond said they eventually were able to tow the boat away from the shore. All day Thursday, the Coast Guard, FWC and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office did grid searches of the coastline where Hossfield’s boat was found hoping to find the missing man. They say they’ll continue as long as the weather and visibility allow. “Our hearts go out to the family and the missing person and we hope for their safe recovery,” Bond said.

At some point, a concerned loved one reported him missing.

His boat was found around 7 pm on Wednesday washed up in Melbourne Beach with the motor still running but no sign of Hossfield.

Bond said it took the sheriff’s office several hours Wednesday night to get the boat unstuck.

“A deputy had to swim out twice to the tow-boat to try and get them the rope. At first, the rope snapped and came flying back in,” Bond said.

Bond said they eventually were able to tow the boat away from the shore.
