Crews battle large fire at apartment building in Manchester; several families displaced

More than 100 firefighters were working to put out a fire that broke out just before 3 pm Sunday in Manchester. Officials said the fire started on the third floor of an apartment building on Hevey Street. They said a cat died in the blaze. Firefighter were met with heavy fire and smoke. Some of the conditions made it difficult to fight the fire.”It was a stubborn fire – we had to dig it out and it became too dangerous for crews to stay inside, so we ordered all companies out of the building and went to a defensive attack,” said Manchester Fire Chief Robert Beaudet. Neighbors were watching for hours as crews tried to fight the flames. “At one point, you couldn’t even see right in front of us,” neighbor Megan Kelly said. Andrea Berwick lives right next door and received a call from a neighbor to rush home.”All the way from Exit 4 on 293, we could see the plume of smoke,” Berwick said. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, according to officials. Beaudet said he is expected to be ok. The cause is under investigation.
